READING & WRITING

We feel very privileged to have Barbara join our team. She is a Macquarie University qualified highly experienced and skilled Teacher with more than 20 years teaching experience in early learning services as well as primary schools.

Barbara is a mother, an avid reader and has a real passion for language, literacy and for encouraging a love of literature.

She is very excited to join Hills Little Readers to plan and implement programs that have a strong focus on supporting and developing the skills in line with the NSW curriculum, particularly in the areas of reading comprehension, creating written text, vocabulary and oral language skills, as well as numeracy skills such as quantity, number, measurement and data.

She is looking forward to meeting and working with small groups of students to help them reach their potential, perform better in school, and ultimately develop a real love of learning!

Vocabulary Development:

Integrate vocabulary instruction within reading and writing activities. Teach students strategies for determining the meanings of unfamiliar words from context clues, word parts (prefixes, suffixes, roots), and dictionaries. Encourage the use of rich and varied vocabulary in writing.

Fluency Practice:

Include activities to improve reading fluency, such as repeated reading, choral reading, echo reading, and reader's theater. Fluent reading enhances comprehension and enjoyment of texts.

Literary Analysis:

Teach students how to analyze literature by examining themes, characters, plot structure, symbolism, and other literary elements. Encourage critical thinking and interpretation of texts through discussions, essays, and creative projects.

Writing Process:

Teach the writing process, including prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Provide opportunities for students to write in various genres and for different purposes, such as narratives, expository essays, persuasive arguments, and poetry.
